Beth's 'Perfect' White Basmati Rice
Makes 2 cups

I have always preferred eating white rice over brown, but it was not until visiting an Indian restaurant where I discovered that Basmati Rice was my new favorite rice. Shiloh Farms only recently started carrying White Basmati Rice, and needless to say, I was thrilled! Our White Basmati Rice is delicious - and I am not just saying this because I work for Shiloh Farms!  There is a marked difference in taste and texture compared to the brand I had been using. I am not sure what it is, but this rice is a flavorful addition to my meals.

Not having extra appliances to cook rice, I have been cooking my rice on my electric stove top. Through trial and error, and taking advice from Shiloh Farms customers, I have finally figured out how to cook the ‘perfect’ rice every time!

Instructions for cooking (yield 2 cups):

  • In a 2-quart saucepan, bring 1 3/4 cup water to a boil.
  • When boiling, stir in 1 cup rice; bring the water back to a gentle simmer.
  • Lower heat to simmer and cover for about 15 minutes. You may need to crack the lid just a bit to keep it from boiling over, but keep the lid on for steaming.
  • After 15 minutes, turn off stove; keep the rice covered and on burner for 10 more minutes.
  • Rice should be dry and fluffy… perfect!

Personally, I like to eat the Shiloh Farms White Basmati Rice plain with a little bit of olive oil and seasoning. But this week, a neighbor gave me some fresh from the garden Green Peas. I steamed the peas and added them to rice – delicious!
