Sorghum Grain, Organic

 Product Description

Sorghum Pilaf

With its hearty, chewy texture and delicate, neutral flavor, SHILOH FARMS Sorghum is a versatile grain with a wide variety of uses. Because it adapts well to other flavors and is naturally gluten free, sorghum is especially useful in replacing wheat products in many recipes.

Because it has a very thin hull, sorghum is typically eaten whole, meaning you get all of the nutrients of the natural whole grain. Sorghum is a valuable source of protein, fiber, iron, and magnesium and is relatively low on the glycemic index, making it a good option for diabetics.

An ancient cereal grain, sorghum is thought to have originated in Northern Africa over 8,000 years ago.

To Cook: Sort* and rinse. Bring 3 cups water & 1 cup sorghum to boil, reduce & simmer, covered for 1 hour or until grain is tender & liquid is absorbed.

Sorghum benefits from 6-8 hours or pre-soaking to help make it more easily digestible. However, it is not essential for cooking as the sorghum will cook without pre-soaking within 1 hour on the stove or 1/2 hour pressure cooking.

Suggestions:
1. Sorghum grain makes a perfect substitute for couscous, bulgur, and barley in soups and side dishes.
2. Use a hand mill or food processor to grind sorghum to the degree of fineness required (coarsely ground for a cooked cereal; finely ground for flour). Flour should be prepared fresh; if not using within a few days, store in the freezer.
3. Try popping sorghum grain! Smaller and lighter than traditional popcorn, popped sorghum has a similar flavor and light crunch.

  1. Makes great tortillas!

Posted by Vijay A on 12th Nov 2021

Sorghum, also called Jowar, is a staple of south India. We grind it in a Nutrimill and make roti (a form of tortilla.) around twice a week. Just steam the floor or knead it with hot water, and roll like tortilla. https://hebbarskitchen.com/jowar-roti-recipe-jowar-bhakri-jolada/

I am very happy with Shiloh Farms that they make these nutritious, whole grains available at an affordable price. I order 25 pounds every few months.

  2. Great Consistent Quality

I eat the sorghum every day. Wonderful product!

  3. New to sorghum - tasty

Posted by Susan on 3rd Sep 2020

I never had sorghum before. I cooked 1 cup in my rice cooker without pre-soaking it. It cooked in about 90 minutes. It is chewy and full of texture. No strong flavor of its own, but I added a tablespoonful of olive oil and some turmeric to the cooking water, so that adds taste and color. I've reheated single servings in the microwave several times now. Reheats well without drying out. The rest is stored in a plastic container in the 'fridge. A good addition to my arsenal of whole grains in my diet.

  4. Great whole grain

Posted by Vijay on 30th Apr 2020

We have ordered Sorghum many times at Shiloh Farms. It is staple in India, but hard to find in US. We are very happy with the product, prompt delivery and great customer service (never had issues, just asked questions over email and got prompt reply.) Wish there were wider variety of millets available.

We grind it on our own (to preserve the bran) in a Nutrimill and make it into "rotis" - Indian equivalent of Tortillas.

  5. Tasty, easy to make, and nutritious

Posted by Joel on 20th Aug 2018

I found out about sorghum in an article describing it as being a gluten-free grain that is also alleged to help boost testosterone.

It's easy to make, has a fragrant earthy taste, and works well mixed in stews of all kinds.

I'm grateful to Shiloh Farms for providing sorghum in the organic form, as organic sorghum is difficult to find.
