Hulless Barley, Organic

$4.99

 Product Description

SHILOH FARMS Organic Hulless Barley is a versatile cereal grain with a chewy texture and rich, nutty flavor.

Hulless barley refers to a specific variety of barley in which the tough, inedible outer hull is only loosely connected to the kernel. Because the outer hull is so loosely adhered, when the grain is harvested in the field, the hull naturally falls off, reducing the need for additional processing to remove it. Because this product requires minimal cleaning, most of the bran and endosperm is left intact and the germ is present.

Hulless Barley is one of the most nutritious grains on Earth, with more fiber and greater overall nutritional value than pearled barley. Naturally high in protein, fiber, and a variety of essential minerals (including manganese, selenium, copper, and phosphorus), it has the lowest glycemic index of any grain (about 1/3 that of wheat), making it a great choice for diabetics. Barley also has a different gluten structure than wheat, meaning that some with celiac disease and wheat allergies are able to safely consume barley.

To Cook: Sort* and rinse. Add 1 part barley to 3 cups water and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer until tender, approximately 1-2 hours.

Because it is a true whole grain, hulless barley requires a fairly long cooking time; however, you can reduce this by pre-soaking the grain for 8-10 hours, or overnight. Pre-soaking will reduce the cooking time by half.

  1. Extra Delicious!!

Posted by Unknown on 16th Feb 2022

As someone who is trying to bring down my blood sugars, I have been trying to make my carbs part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Whole grains slow down the digestion process which means you feel full for longer and that there aren't also the swings in blood sugar. But here's the thing: these whole grains aren't just healthy for you, they actually have a wonderful taste and texture. I love them and have re-ordered them from Shiloh Farms. They are tasty enough that when simply cooked in water or fat free stock they taste great, but also if I add a bit of a vinaigrette dressing -- heavy on the vinaigrette or citrus juice, they are extra yummy. Try them!

  2. Best Barley Ever!

Posted by Unknown on 16th Dec 2021

Hulless Barley is almost impossible to buy locally ,and hulled will do in a pinch but it doesn't compare in texture and nuttiness of the Hulless. This is my first purchase from Shiloh Farms, I was very happy with quality and prompt delivery and 15% discount code was nice too!

  3. Great for breakfast

Posted by Trudy on 15th Jan 2021

I usually have a bowl of hulless barley in the morning with sliced apple and cinnamon. I sprinkle it on salads and use it in chickpea patties. It’s versatile and highly nutritious. It can be hard to get sometimes, so when they have it , I order about 12 bags. If you eat barley, this is the kind to get!

  4. Get it - you won't be sorry you did!

Posted by David on 15th Apr 2020

Decided to get barley after watching the movie (documentary) The Game Changers, as in the Roman Gladiators were called bean and barley eaters. The folks at Shiloh have unquestionably earned their money on this one. You taste the fresh delicious and nutritious whole grain.

  5. New to Barley

Posted by Bizzy Girl on 30th Jan 2020

In an effort to eat whole plant based foods to reduce my cholesterol, I decided to add barley to my diet. I really love the taste and consistency of the barley and find eating it as a breakfast meal or as an addition to dinners simply delicious! I soak it overnight, cook up a batch and leave it in my fridge ready to use as I see fit.
