Striking the perfect balance between delicious and nutritious, SHILOH FARMS Organic Hulless Barley Flakes earn top marks across the board! Whether served hot, cold, or anywhere in between, barley flakes' chewy texture and rich, nutty flavor will make them a fast favorite!

A rugged, sturdy grain found throughout the northern hemisphere, barley is naturally high in protein, fiber, and a variety of essential minerals (including manganese, selenium, copper, and phosphorus). With the lowest glycemic index of any grain (about 1/3 that of wheat) and a different gluten structure than wheat, barley can be a great option for both diabetics and those dealing with gluten sensitivities. 

In creating these flakes, a specialized hulless variety of barley is carefully steamed, heated, rolled, and cooled to stabilize the grain (meaning the enzymes are neutralized to prevent oxidation and rancidity). Heat transforms the starches into simpler sugars (making them more easily digested) while leaving the barley's vitamin and mineral content intact.

To Cook: Add 1 part barley flakes and a pinch of salt to 2 parts boiling water. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 5-8 minutes, or until liquid is mostly absorbed.

1. Add raisins, cranberries, or other dried fruits to the flakes as they are cooking. The fruits will plump and help to sweeten the cereal.
2. Sweeten with honey, maple syrup, or your favorite natural sweetener; finish with toasted nuts.
3. Substitute up to ½ cup flakes for flour in quick breads.
4. Replace up to ½ the flour in pancakes with flakes.
5. Use flakes instead of rolled oats or breadcrumbs in casseroles or as toppings.
6. Make a delicious crumble topping for pies and fruit crisps.
7. Mix with dried fruits, nuts, and seeds for homemade granolas, mueslis, or trail mixes. 
8. Use in vegetarian burgers, or add for substance to hamburgers or meat loaf.
9. Add to muffins, cookies, breads, or other baked goods.

    This is such an excellent tasting cooked breakfast. I add chia seeds, raisins, joia berries, blueberries, strawberries, tad of honey and I use oat or soy milk. Absolutely delicious and healthy!

    Unique nutty flavor and texture. Prefer it cooked in milk rather than water. Great with butter salt and pepper or brown sugar, cinnamon and fruit.
