Loading... Please wait...Wheat Flakes are made from kernels of wheat that have been steamed to soften, then passed through steel rollers to flatten them into flakes. They look similar to the old fashioned version of rolled oats. They are firmer than oats, thus they will need further cooking before eating.
When substituting Organic Wheat Flakes for rolled oats in baked goods and hearty griddle cakes. (It is a good idea to soften the wheat flakes first by pouring boiling water over them. Cover and let stand about 10 minutes, then add them to your recipes.)
To cook: Add 1 cup of Wheat Flakes to 2 cups of boiling water. Cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until water is absorbed.
Suggestions:
1. Add raisins or diced dried fruits to the flakes as they are cooking (about the last 3 to 5 minutes of cooking time).
2. For an unusual twist, add cinnamon and chopped nuts.
3. Substitute up to 1/2 cup flakes for flour in quick breads.
4. Replace up to half of the flour in pancakes with flakes.
5. Use flakes instead of bread crumbs in casseroles or as toppings.
6. Use for a delightful topping for pies and fruit crisps.
7. Use in making delicious granola's.
8. Use in grain burgers, add to hamburgers or meat loaf
9. Use in muffins and cookie recipes
10. Add Wheat Flakes to long simmering recipes such as chili, curried vegetables, bean stews and soups to add texture.
