Loading... Please wait...Rye Flakes are made from whole Organic Rye Grain berries that have been steamed, then flattened with steel rollers. Rye Flakes have a special Unique flavor that many enjoy. Their cooked texture is just naturally chewy. Bread made from rye is heavier, denser and usually darker than wheat bread.
To Cook: Bring 2 cups water to boil and 1 cup rye flakes, cover. Reduce to simmer for 15-20 minutes or until water is absorbed.
Suggestions.
1. Add raisins or diced dried fruits to the flakes as they are cooking (about the last 3 to 5 minutes of cooking time).
2. For an unusual twist, add cinnamon and chopped nuts.
3. Substitute up to 1/2 cup flakes for flour in quick breads.
4. Replace up to half of the flour in pancakes with flakes.
5. Use flakes instead of bread crumbs in casseroles or as toppings.
6. Use in grain burgers, add to hamburgers or meat loaf.
7. Use in muffins and cookie recipes
