Loading... Please wait...Oat bran is the edible outer layer of the oat grain obtained by milling dehulled steamed oats. Oat bran is a very concentrated form of soluble fiber which reduces the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream, and reduces the low-density lipoprotein (LDL), otherwise known as the "bad" cholesterol. Once consumed, oat bran enters the digestive tract where its soluble fiber absorbs water and forms a gel-like substance (bolus), creating a feeling of fullness. This process removes calories from the body and slows down the sugar assimilation.
Oat bran contains about 50% more fiber and soluble fiber than rolled oats. It also has more protein, calcium, iron, thiamin, phosphorus, riboflavin, magnesium, and zinc.
Oat bran can be eaten raw or cooked as a cereal. To Cook: Boil 1 cup of water, stir in 1/4 cup of oat bran and boil about 2 minutes to your favorite consistency. Suggestions: Stir in 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, about 1/4 cup of your favorite dried fruits, chopped. Top with milk and sweetner.
Suggestions:
1. Oat bran makes a fiber rich addition to cereals, bread, cookies, muffins, pancakes, pizza crusts, casseroles and much more.
2. Use in place of wheat bran for a light, oaty taste.
3. Sprinkle directly on hot cereals, yogurts and cottage cheese.
