Made from the dried and ground flesh of the coconut, SHILOH FARMS Coconut Flour is a versatile and nutritious alternative to traditional grain-based flours. Its light coconut flavor is ideally suited for use in either sweet or savory dishes.
Coconut is often referred to as a "functional food" due to the many health benefits it provides. A particularly good source of fiber, protein, zinc, iron, and healthy fatty acids, coconut flour is relatively low in carbohydrates and sugars and scores low on the glycemic index.
Coconut trees can live for up to 70 years, each producing thousands of coconuts throughout its lifespan. To make coconut flour, a coconut's tough out husk is removed, leaving its rich, white pulp. After straining to separate out the coconut's milk, the pulp is then dried at low temperatures before being ground into a fine, delicate flour.
The fruit harvested from coconut trees also provides a nutritious source of coconut meat, juice, milk, and oil that has fed and nourished populations around the world for generations. A dietary staple in many cultures around the world, nearly 1/3 of the world's population depends on coconut to some degree for their food.
Usage: Coconut flour is best used in combination with other flours and can be substituted for up to 20% of the total flour in your recipe. It is highly absorbant and typically requires increasing the amount of liquid in your recipe. We recommend a 1:1 ratio of coconut flour to additional liquid (ie: if substituting 2 Tbsp. coconut flour, add an additional 2Tbsp. liquid).
1. Add to quickbreads, muffins, cookies, cakes, or other baked goods.
2. Thicken soups, stews, gravies, or sauces.
3. Replace cornmeal or flour in breadings for fish or poultry.
4. Use as a binder in meatloaf, meatballs, hamburgers, or veggie burgers.
5. Stir into smoothies or shakes for a boost of protein and fiber.
